In 2017, we teamed up with our close friends and stout maestros at J. Wakefield Brewing to brew Affogato and simultaneously launch our Dessert Series. Over three years and more than two dozen confectionary-inspired Imperial Stout releases later, we've Hit Refresh on the one that started it all.
Faced with the post-meal quandary of coffee or dessert, Affogato is the Italian solution. Sourcing coffee from both brewers' partner roasters, Barrington for Trillium and Mostra for J. Wakefield, we've then layered Madagascar vanilla beans, lactose, and brown sugar on top of a massive Imperial Stout to mimic the wonderful experience of espresso-meets-gelato.
Pouring dark black with glass-coating viscosity, Affogato leads with an assertive coffee character. Notes of roasted hazelnut, cacao nib, cherry skin, and an underlying earthiness immediately jump from the glass. Upon the first sip, coffee gives way to a luscious vanilla/milk chocolate highlight, which slowly morphs into more traditional stout notes of caramelized brown sugar, molasses, and brownie crust washing over the back of the palate. Finishing big, yet soft and creamy, Affogato's gentle sweetness is kept in check by the coffee's roasty bitterness.
