The 1738 Accord Royal was created to fill a specific gap in the Rémy Martin range: between the approachable VSOP and the more complex XO, a cognac with the warmth and richness that extra oak treatment develops but without the full complexity of extended aging. The toasted French oak casks used for 1738 differ from the standard Limousin oak used across most Rémy Martin aging — toasting caramelizes the wood's inner surface, releasing additional vanilla, caramel, and toffee compounds that transfer to the cognac more readily than the slower extraction from untoasted wood. The result is a rounder, warmer, and more immediately generous character than the standard VSOP at a similar age.
