Teeling Blackpitts is the first peated single malt whiskey ever distilled in Dublin — triple distilled from peated barley sourced from Glenesk in Speyside, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Sauternes French wine casks, and bottled non-chill filtered at 46% ABV, with the triple distillation reducing the phenol level to produce a gentler, more refined smokiness than Islay or Scottish Highland peated malts typically achieve.

The name references the Blackpitts area directly behind the Teeling distillery in the Liberties, historically famous for its abundance of malting houses — an appropriate reference for a peated expression that connects the whiskey to the industrial heritage of the district. Sauternes finishing is an unusual pairing for a peated malt: Sauternes is a French sweet white wine from Bordeaux, and the residual honeyed sweetness and stone fruit character of the Sauternes cask creates an unexpected tension with the smoke — softening the peat rather than complementing it with red fruit as sherry does, or amplifying it as some other cask types would. The result is a peated Irish single malt with a character that is distinctly different from its Scottish counterparts.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Peated malt character with the Sauternes cask's honeyed sweetness softening the smoke
  • Palate: The gentle smokiness that triple distillation produces from peated barley alongside the ex-bourbon vanilla and Sauternes stone fruit character
  • Finish: Clean and gently smoky — the phenol level reduced by triple distillation, making the finish more accessible than heavily peated Scottish malts
