Glaetzer Wines are crafted by third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers with the Australian winemaking passion and heritage. After a seven week journey from Brandenburg, Germany, the first Glaetzers arrived in the Barossa valley in 1888, where over a century later, patriarch Colin Glaezter would officially establish a family winery: Glaetzer Wines. The wines established then are still harvested from and growing strong and self-sufficiently in the northern Ebenezer region of the valley, with newer vines originating from grafts of these ancient ones. Today, Colin Glaetzers son, Ben Glaetzer, carries on the family legacy of producing premium Barossa Valley wines. Wallace by Ben Glaetzer is a full-bodied and vibrant blend of Shiraz and Grenache. This blend offers an homage to his wife Judith's heritage with both her ancestral name, Wallace, and the Celtic cross, thistle and the Celtic knot pattern featured on the label. Sourced from 50-100 year old vines, the unoaked Grenache brings fruity, soft and juicy character to the blend while the Shiraz, matured for 16 months in 2-3 year barrels of 80 percent French and 20 percent American oak, lends structure and balance. This 2017 Wallace Shiraz-Grenache blend opens with fresh, dark berry aromas alongside notes of pepper, tobacco and sweet florals. The palate is supple and crisp with notes of blackberry, Turkish delight, cola, cherries, vanilla and oak. The finish is long and silky, with fine grained tannins and lingering hints of florals and licorice. For pairing, the team at CWS suggests Cassoulet or a peppercorn crusted steak.
